Laura was surprised to see Holmes in her office. Being told Stapleton had been married, she screamed, "He cheated me. He said he would marry me! I wrote the letter out of his ideas. Later it was he who did not want me to go for the appointment. I didn't know he used me as the cat's paw. He is a bilker!"
Laura's testimonies made the case clear. Holmes guessed Stapleton would take into action that night. Therefore he went with Watson and hid in the moors. Then, they let Henry appear on the moors by himself.
At dark night, heavy fog covered the moors, making people feel dreadful. The huge beast like in the legend showed up. Shining, hideous, and howling, it dashed swiftly toward Henry. It seemed to be well trained. Holmes raised his gun. "Pa!" He missed it. "Pa-pa!" He shot it. While it was struggling to run toward Henry, Holmes fired continuously several times before he shot it dead. Watson propped frightened Sir Henry and ran to Stapleton's house.
